Vlad was an awful teacher. I couldn’t stop laughing. He bounced around from subject to subject without much direction and ended up just pointing at things and making me repeat him. I finally grabbed some beginner Russian books and we went over them together. He complained about the simple expressions but I had to remind him I had no idea what they meant.

Dmitriy called, telling Vlad to take me home and stop avoiding work, so I checked out two of the books, returning the rest, and we headed to his car. It took longer than it should have because he kept pointing at things outside and quizzing me on what they were. I think he was just trying to avoid going back to work.

When we pulled up to my apartment, he turned off the heat, grimacing. “How can you like it so warm? It is sweltering.”

I laughed. Truthfully, I was a little hot too. The guys tended to blast the heat the whole ride. I would be sweating by the time we made it home. “Blame Dmitriy. I used to walk home, he won’t let me anymore.”

“Влюбленный дурак.”

“What does that mean?”

“Look it up.” He rolled down his windows, trying to dissipate the heat. He turned the car off, leaving them open as he walked me upstairs.

“Hey, can I ask a favor?”

“What kind of favor? I am handsome but Dmitriy would kill me if I made love to you.”

I laughed, shaking my head. “Not that. Can you not tell Dmitriy I’m learning Russian?”

He gave me a funny look. “Why?”

“Because he constantly says things to me even though he knows I can’t understand him. I want to figure out what he’s saying without him knowing.”

A grin spread across his face. “Absolutely. I live to torment my cousin.”
